Actually let me explain it better here, Vulvovaginitis is the most common cause of a brownish vaginal discharge. Any infection of the vulva or vagina is called Vulvovaginitis. It is caused by several things like Yeasts, bacteria, viruses and some sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
Most of the time you will have a white cottage cheese like discharge from a candida albicans (yeast) infection and not a brownish vaginal discharge. However the severity and the timing around your menstrual cycle could alter the color. A yeast infection usually has no odor or a slight yeasty odor along with it.
You can easily cure a candida infection, if you do it right. You probably won't get a full cure from an over the counter medication. They may cure your symptoms for a short time and then there you are with another infection. If you do the right program you never have to worry about a yeast infection again.
A bacterial infection is also another cause of Vulvovaginitis commonly known as bacterial vaginosis. A yellowish to brownish vaginal discharge with a foul odor is usually caused by this type of infection. This will be a liquidity type discharge that could be very light or quite heavy. If you have a severe bacterial infection this fishy foul odor can be strong a very unpleasant.
Bacterial vaginosis can cause you many problems if you ignore you symptoms and decide not to treat it. Bacterial vaginosis has been proven to cause pre-term delivery if you happen to be pregnant. Bacterial Vaginosis can be cured very easy in the privacy of your own home with a good program to follow.
Another issue that produces a brownish vaginal discharge is (PID) pelvic inflammatory disease. If the ovaries, fallopian tubes or uterus have a bacterial infection is called PID. This is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) type of bacterial infection caused by the two types of bacteria, gonorrhea and Chlamydia. Even though with this disease a foul odor can accompany it symptoms generally are more like painful urination, pain in the pelvis or lower back and bleeding after intercourse. Your physician needs to be seen if these are the symptoms that you are experiencing.
You might not have PID you could just have Gonorrhea or Chlamydia. A brownish vaginal discharge can be associated with either one of these STD's and should be seen by your doctor.
Extreme itching, bleeding after intercourse and a brownish vaginal discharge could also be caused by genital warts. This really a viral skin disease that causes little wart like growths that are soft on the genitals and is considered a STD. Do not try to treat these warts with an over the counter wart treatment, they are not the same. You need to see your doctor on this one.
One of the very bad things that could cause a continuous watery bloody, pink or brownish discharge with a foul odor would be cervical cancer. Vaginal bleeding between periods, and after intercourse or really any bleeding after menopause may also be an indication of cervical cancer. If you have this type of discharge please consult a doctor.
