Learn about the Diabetic Retinopathy disease which occurs in diabetes patients. The disease of Diabetic Retinopathy damage eye's retina and leading cause of blindness. Diabetes occurs when diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels inside the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The blood vessels of the retina are the first to be damaged by high blood sugar. Diabetic retinopathy includes microaneurysms, intraretinal hemorrhage, exudates, macular edema, macular ischemia, neovascularization, vitreous hemorrhage, and traction retinal detachment.
Diabetic symptoms are not identified in the early stage. Later symptoms of diabetes Retinopathy are eye pain, blurred vision, floaters and flashes, difficulty reading, double vision sudden loss of vision. Diabetic retinopathy can also cause macular edema. The macula is the inner part of the retina that allows for detail to be seen. If you have diabetic retinopathy, at first you may not notice changes to your vision. But over time, diabetic retinopathy can get worse and cause vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy usually affects both eyes.
The treatment of diabetes retinopathy is generally very successful in preventing or reducing loss of vision but it does not treat the disease. The main treatment for serious retina problems is laser eye surgery, which is regularly very effective on preventing loss of vision if the treatment is done prior to the severe damage of the retina. Treatment for retinopathy may not be needed unless the center of the retina has been affected. When the macula is damaged with macular edema, laser treatment is needed.
Prevention is the best way to control any type of diseases. The best way for preventing diabetic retinopathy is to control diabetes and keep blood pressure at normal levels. People with diabetes should have a yearly eye examination, in which the student is dilated with eye drops, so that retinopathy can be detected and any necessary treatment can be started early. Tight control of blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol is very important for preventing diabetic retinopathy.
