Viral Conjunctivitis or contagious pink eye is usually caused by viruses that spread from other different ailments like colds, sore throats, respiratory infections and others. Bacterial Conjunctivitis is caused by certain types of bacteria that have made their way to the eye. Common bacteria include staphylococci and streptococci. Allergic Conjunctivitis is caused by allergic reactions to different substances such as fumes, cosmetics, medication, and many others. Pink eye usually effects people who have allergic conditions.Newborns are particularly susceptible to pinkeye and can be more prone to serious health complications
Sometimes a substance in the environment can irritate the eyes and cause pinkeye; for example, chemicals (such as chlorine and soaps) and air pollutants (such as smoke and fumes).Redness, irritation and watering of the eyes are symptoms common to all forms of conjunctivitis. Itch is variable. Acute allergic conjunctivitis is typically itchy, sometimes distressingly so, and the patient often complains of some lid swelling. Chronic allergy often causes just itch or irritation, and often much frustration because the absence of redness or discharge can lead to accusations of hypochondria.
